vibrationblockThis block of oil stained wood was removed from the shed built by Harland & Wolff to test Titanic’s engines. During the testing phase the engines had to be operated at full speed. To keep the resulting vibrations from tearing down the testing facility, Harland & Wolff lined the floor with wooden blocks that could vibrate independently thus lessening the strain placed on the building.

Closeup of the testing shed floor as seen in 1911.
