This mother-of-pearl pin would have been available for purchase in the barbershop onboard RMS Celtic. Judging by the inscription on the box top, it appears that this particular pin was given away as a prize during a contest – perhaps a dance or treasure hunt. We have never before seen a pin complete with its original box. This is truly a rare specimen!
Another White Star Line disaster ship, Celtic was launched on April 4th, 1901. In 1917, she hit a mine off the Isle of Man. In 1918 she was torpedoed by a German U-Boat. In 1928, Celtic ran aground off Queenstown, Ireland. In 1933, while still stuck on the rocks, Celtic was finally declared a total loss and salvaged for scrap.
